A very famous Maharashtrian snack time recipe, made with stuffed potatoes and combination of Indian spices. all-time favorite snack with green chutney or catch up.


  • Potato: 4 medium sizes mashed
  • Green chili: 1 tablespoon finely chopped
  • Ginger-garlic paste: 1 teaspoon
  • Onion: 1 medium size chopped
  • Cumin seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Asafoetida: a pinch
  • Coriander seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Cumin-coriander powder: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar: 1 teaspoon
  • Lemon juice: 1 tablespoon
  • Coriander leaves: 1 tablespoon
  • Black pepper powder: 1/2 teaspoon

Ingredients for BATATA VADA BATTER:

  • Bengal gram flour: 1 cup(200 gram)
  • Carom seeds: 1 teaspoon
  • Turmeric powder: 1/2 teaspoon
  • Red chili powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil: 2 tablespoon
  • Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
  • Water as required

How to make BATATA VADA:

  1. Furthermore, for stuffing, heat up the oil in a broad pan on a medium-high flame.
  2. Once the oil is hot enough, add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chili, ginger garlic paste, asafetida, and crushed coriander seeds.
  3. Saute them well until they splutter, add finely chopped onion, mix it well and saute again until the onion becomes golden brown.
  4. Moreover add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin-coriander powder, salt to taste, lemon juice and sugar.
  5. Mix it all together very nicely and cook for a minute on low flame.
  6. Lastly, add chopped coriander leaves and black pepper powder, mix it all again well.
  7. Finally, the stuffing for batata vada is ready, keep it aside to cool down.
  8. Another side, take the deep bowl and add all the Bengal gram flour, carom seeds, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt to taste.
  9. Mix all together well, add water as per need little by little and whisk well until to get the lumps free and little thick batter.
  10. Then add baking soda and oil to the batter and whisk only one direction for few seconds.
  11. As a result is a batter for batata vada is ready.
  12. Together with, heat up the oil to deep fry the vada on medium-high flame.
  13. Now, take 1 tablespoon of potato mixture into a greased palm and make a ball.
  14. Most of all, make all the balls of remaining potato mixture.
  15. In addition, take one potato ball and deep it into a gram flour batter.
  16. So the oil is hot enough turn the flame low and Put the batata vada into the hot oil carefully.
  17. At a time fry 3-4 vada till nicely golden.
